〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Anthy Himemiya
CHARACTER AGE: Appears 14, is implied to be ancient/some sort of immortal
CANON ORIGIN: Revolutionary Girl Utena
CHRONOLOGY: Episode 36, after the final duel with Touga but before Utena discovers Anthy with Akio
CLASS: Witch Neutral-ish? Anthy will associate with an active hero (Utena Tenjou) and will probably not disrupt her heroics, but she's a complicated misanthrope who helps manipulate a ton of the Bad Shit that happens in her canon. Without her brother and the dueling game that her world is built around, however, she loses a lot of her drive for manipulating events around her. She won't openly go after people and likely won't go full villain, but isn't above using her powers to mess with people she particularly doesn't like. More below??!
HOUSING: Randomize her! (Though she may move on quickly.)

BACKGROUND:
Anthy's background is made pretty complicated by virtue of the storytelling devices often used by her canon apart from the storyline itself. A lot of the major plot points are allegorical in nature, utilizing fairytale elements such as princes, princesses, and witches to tell a story that nevertheless takes place in 1990s Japan. Further, a lot of details in regards to both Anthy and her brother, whose backgrounds are both deeply ingrained in this fairytale setting, are left hella vague.

So. Once upon a time, there was a prince called Dios in the world, and he did everything he could to save the world's princesses from every bit of despair that might befall them. Keeping in mind that (almost) every girl in the world can qualify as a princess, this mission eventually became too much for him, and he found himself on the brink of death. Still, he tried to press on, but his younger sister, Anthy, knowing that she'd lose him otherwise, hid him away from the world. In doing so, she incurred the wrath of the people, and was stabbed with a whole lotta swords. More swords than is reasonable or possible. Forever. She is also dubbed a 'witch' by these folks, but whether she was a witch before or only after this occurrence is probably debatable. (Like pretty much everything else in this series.)

The main story of the show doesn't let us in on this bit right away, though. Anthy is introduced to viewers as a quiet, unpopular student in a bad relationship with a member of the student council, Vice President Kiyoichi Saionji. The protagonist, Utena Tenjou, witnesses and disapproves of Saionji's abusive behavior towards Anthy, but ultimately confronts him due to his rejecting and publicly humiliating her best friend, Wakaba. With Saionji being the captain of Ohtori Academy's kendo club, Utena finds it fitting to challenge him to a duel. And, boy, does that snowball in a big way!

It turns out that the student council members are participating in something of a game in their off hours. They duel each other according to instructions given by an unknown individual known as "End of the World," and the top dog is granted possession of/engagement to Anthy, who is referred to as the Rose Bride and somehow holds the promise of a power that can 'revolutionize the world.' Utena doesn't really know or care about any of that when she miraculously defeats Saionji in their duel, but she is nonetheless dubbed the current champion. That night, Anthy greets Utena once more and informs her of their engagement, that Anthy now belongs to Utena.

Their relationship grows into a primary mover of the plot. Utena goes from saying she'll throw her next duel, wanting nothing to do with the game, to wanting to protect Anthy from being possessed and used by others. She fights her way through several duels, the driving forces of which reveal more about herself and her schoolmates. Her desire to be a prince transforms Anthy (not literally, this time) into a princess to be rescued, and they form a strong bond that allows them to work together to win the duels and overcome various other problems. The Wikipedia episode guide is good for a breakdown of basic events.

Eventually, Anthy reveals that she is the younger sister of the school's acting Chairman, Akio Ohtori, and that's about where Utena's journey starts to spiral down towards its conclusion. The two girls go to live with Akio in his tower-based apartment with attached planetarium, and Utena begins to fall for the Cool Adult Akio. The dueling game has a purpose, and Utena's being driven towards its conclusion.

"The Power to Revolutionize the World" means many different things to many different people throughout the series, but for Akio it means the restoration of himself as the world's Prince. He really doesn't care what it means for anybody else, because his intention is to seek out and/or cultivate a noble, princely spirit and use that, in sword form, to open the gate that supposedly seals his lost powers. Utena, ultimately, is this spirit, and Anthy's been working alongside Akio to manipulate and push her towards this goal. It's stated that they've tried this before and implied that they've tried a number of different methods. Anthy's lingering love for Dios and her cynicism against the world (for having been branded a witch and having suffered immensely at people's hands) pushes her to indiscriminately use others to achieve this end.

From the canon point at which I'm apping her, Anthy is in the midst of this manipulation, and things are about to come to a head. It should be noted, though, that Anthy herself is already changing.

PERSONALITY:
Most of Anthy's existence is X-Treme(!!) Pokerface. In her daily school-life, she's very placid and passive, lacking much of an active personality. Many people dislike her because of this, whether it's for her doormat behavior itself or because it's easy for them to project their own negative feelings onto her. At most, she's hollowly pleasant, smiling and agreeing with those around her in conversation. All of her hobbies are solitary and often cultivated in secret. She tends to a greenhouse full of roses, plays piano, and takes care of animals. She's bad at cooking (and flat out seems to not understand social conventions around appropriate meals) and math. She only has one friend, a tiny monkey named ChuChu, and she initially seems hesitant, in not uninterested, in cultivating new friendships.

Under this calm exterior, Anthy is filled with hate and despair. Subjected to constant torture (invisibly pierced by many, many swords) at the hands of humanity and deprived of the Prince she once loved, she holds little regard for the people in general. The only exception, if he can be called human at all, is her brother Akio, the twisted remains of Dios, the Prince, warped by his own anger and sadness over their fates.

Anthy truly loves Akio, or she at least loves who he was and she can't bring herself to concede that he will never be like Dios again. This unwillingness to let go has evolved into what seems to be a symbiotic relationship and what is definitely an abusive one. Though she occasionally fights back in passive-aggressive ways, Anthy is largely trapped under Akio's influence, helping him to manipulate students into the dueling game and submitting to a sexual relationship with him. Anthy is additionally trapped by her guilt, knowing that she is responsible for Dios leaving the world and Akio entering it. It is not until she grows close to Utena that she can even fathom a desire to escape, which ultimately doesn't solidify until the end of the series.

In the most succinct nutshell, Anthy is a villain of her own creation, in a sense. She made a horrific sacrifice that ultimately meant nothing and began a cycle of self-destruction for herself and Akio that spread outward from them. They created a paradox world in which they emotionally/mentally manipulate children into fighting each other so that they can steal their power in an attempt to regain what they've lost. At the same time, she herself is trapped, so afraid of the world outside of her that familiarity in torture seems like the better option.

She's finding that not all people are horrific, however, and that she's still capable of caring and apparently worth caring about. With that, her heart is changing. She's beginning to doubt her role as the Rose Bride, to doubt that she's doomed to be a hated figure in a fairy tale. She's capable of changing, still.

POWER:
Witch, witch, witch! - The premise of the fairy tale logic at the center of Utena is that all girls are princesses, waiting to be saved by the Mythical Prince Dios. Anthy, being Dios' sister and not a romantic prospect, is the only girl who cannot be a princess. So she's a witch instead.

What does that mean? Unfortunately the show is really vague about it. Dios/Akio and Anthy are implied to be really, really old. In the manga adaptation, they're basically gods who have been present from the start of creation. The anime doesn't go into specifics of their origin, and a lot of the visuals used in their backstory are Anachronism Central. They're the physical embodiment of concepts, so it's tough to pin down! They're both very powerful and pretty unsettling.

Anthy can do things like shape-shift or otherwise cast illusions; she spends a whole season disguised off-and-on as Mamiya, a counterpart, male "Rose Bride," and maybe marries the father of Miki Koaru, presumably not as a 14-year-old girl. She also turned another classmate into a cow, at one point. And probably made that classmate think she'd laid an egg, which took some surreal turns. She also, of course, is part of the maintaining powers of Ohtori Academy, a place somehow separate from the rest of the world in which time and memory don't seem to work quite right.

As in the show, I'm not planning on having any of her power be used in any obvious or showy ways. While she's very powerful, she doesn't use her power to accomplish daily tasks or participate in battles. She's never really shown using them offensively or defensively. She mostly just runs around in the background using them for manipulation purposes. Or to straight up fuck with people for fun?

In the MoM-verse, there's obviously going to be a cap on her ability to manipulate the world, since it's in the hands of an unassociated force. For potential plotting reasons, I'd like to have her able to control a limited space, but I definitely won't assume she's as horrible a beast as she is in her own world. I will also have a plotting/permissions post open regarding this and other things! (More below!)

REVISION SUMMARY:
When boiled down, Anthy's powers are essentially the alteration of reality within her established space. In canon, this is Ohtori Academy (and potentially the surrounding town). In MoM, this will be scaled down to give her dominion over whatever building she's currently in, or within a mile radius when she's outdoors.

Within this space, the environment is subject to change. Things like improbable staircases and elevators, embellishments to clothing, the sudden appearance/disappearance of objects, objects re-arranging and transforming in odd ways, sudden rains of rose petals, etc., are now possible within the space in question. The Absolute Destiny Apocalypse sequences are a good point of reference for the type of illusions/alterations in mind: floating castle, structural impossibility, clothing transformation, appearance of plant life... There's also things like cars springing up from the ground and making your classmate think she's laid an egg only for it to grow huge and explode.

Once one leaves Anthy's active environment, they'll find the outside world a perfectly normal place, and any alterations to their clothing will vanish. Did any of that really happen the way to think it did? You aren't sure, and it's probably better to just forget it.

Apart from illusory environmental control, Anthy has control over her own body. She can instantaneously vanish and reappear (see above clip, again), change her own clothing, and alter her appearance (or otherwise disguise herself/obscure her identity/alter others' perceptions of her appearance). She spent a portion of the series in the form of another person, Mamiya, and seemingly became a classmate's stepmother while being shown standing with her 'husband' in her Rose Bride costuming, not in an altered body. When she spoke to said classmate of the phone as his 'new mother,' he seemingly didn't recognize her voice.

To cause transformations onto other living beings is possible in canon; she causes another girl to transform into a cow via a designer cowbell that said girl stubbornly refuses to take off for several days. In order to produce an object like this in MoM, Anthy would have to negate the field around her for the sake of creating a single object that remains under her influence. Any bearer of this object would have to keep it on their person for a week in order to fully transform. Transformations can be obvious, like the cow, or subtle, like an unreasonable change of mind/heart/ideology. This, of course, would require specific plotting the player in question and is also not something likely to be implemented very much. If I need to clip the power-set down, this can easily go.

Sword of Dios - In the world of Utena, one's characteristics can manifest as a sword! From the beginning of the series, Anthy is able to summon the Sword of Dios, which can be pulled from her chest. She can also imbue it with extra power, and a closer connection to Anthy means a stronger sword!

Later, everybody else gets their own heart swords and people start swapping swords like crazy, but the Sword of Dios is the OG sword.

Chu-Chu - Chu-Chu is a monkey. He wears a tie and an earring and is Anthy's animal companion. Some people like to theorize that he's a witch's familiar, but who knows?! He's cute and stupid, though!

FINAL NOTES: Revolutionary Girl Utena has a lot of triggering material, including incest and sexual abuse/assault. Anthy herself is in a dubiously consensual sexual relationship with her adult brother. I'm most definitely including warnings if/when these subjects come up, as well as creating an opt-out option in my plotting/permissions post for those that want to avoid all mention of these subjects or would rather not interact with Anthy altogether.
